Lei is currently a machine learning engineering leader (L5), expert, in SPG Division of Apple. Before moving to Apple, he was a principle machine learning researcher/architect at Huawei Research, USA. Leading a global team of scientists and engineers to build machine learning platform with primary focus on Database, and Cloud services. Before joining Huawei, he was a senior research scientist (expert level) and machine learning project Leader at Hewlett Packard Research Laboratories (HP Labs) in Palo Alto, California. His research interests cover multiple aspects of machine learning and data mining. Lei's current and previous projects cover the topics of deep learning and its applications, machine Learning in data management, large scale multi-class classification, recommendation systems, social network analysis, malware detection, wearable data mining, personalized healthcare with sensory data, chemometrics for diagnostics solutions and data driven education.
Lei received Ph.D in computer science and engineering from Michigan State University, with research focus on data mining and machine learning. Before MSU, he obtained B.S. and M.S. in computer science from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. His works have generated over 40 U.S patents and 30 paper publications. He is the winner of several best paper and machine learning system awards in international conferences or competitions, including ECML-PKDD'2016, WI'2016, etc. Lei is an IEEE Senior Member, Chair, Session Chair, PC Member, Reviewer for several top ranking Journals and Conferences in the field of Machine Learning and Data Mining.
